The year 2020 has been a troublesome year for the whole world due to the world pandemic, Covid-19. Almost all sectors of the economy have been greatly affected of which some sectors will take time to revive fully. Many economic and non-economic activities were at shutdown and social life like communal gathering and others were banned as a measure to curb the spread of the virus. Lockdown was declared in March 2020 in Uganda of which most Senior Six (S.6) leavers were preparing to start applying to the different universities in Uganda and other parts of the world. Due to lockdown, many students got stranded because all applications were done online and yet some students like those in rural settings could not access internet. Higher Education in the New Cities: more needs to be done to uplift science education

As of June 2020, Uganda only had one city, Kampala. Interestingly, by August 2020, it had 10 more. In July it was Arua, Gulu, Mbale, Jinja, Masaka, Mbarara, and Fort Portal that were elevated from municipalities to cities. Then in August 2020, Lira, Soroti and Hoima were also upgraded. The number then rises to 11 cities in Uganda. This article looks at the 2020 admissions data in the 4 public universities in the 4 selected cities. These are Muni University (Arua), Gulu University, Lira University and Soroti University.Lira University. LU admitted a total of 342 students under private admissions scheme, with girls constituting 44% of this figure. Furthermore, under government admissions, 76 have been admitted under national merit scheme, and 22 under district quota scheme.  This brings the total sum 440 new students admitted for undergraduate studies. Government sponsorship: District Quota admissions for academic year 2020/2021 for Lango sub region

Makerere University has released a list of students admitted to public universities under the district quota scheme. Government sponsors 4000 students for undergraduate studies to public universities through for three schemes. There is national merit, district quota scheme and sports & disability. The option is through the loan scheme.Overall, a total of 1,157 students were admitted under this scheme, which allocates a fix number of slots to each district. Makerere University got the lions share and took 646, Lira University (22), Gulu University (54), Muni University (24), Kyambogo University (182), and Mbarara University of Science & Technology got 50. Others are Kabale University (30), Busitema University (36), Makerere University Business School got 90, and Soroti University got 23. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a consortium of 85 Universities in 36 African countries, in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, Gulu University and Egerton University are implementing an eight year post graduate scholarship program aimed at transforming African agricultural universities and their graduates to better respond to developmental challenges through enhanced application of science, technology, business and innovation for rural agricultural transformation. The program started in 2016 and will run up to 2024 at Gulu University. The implementing universities for this programme are Gulu University in Uganda and Egerton University in Kenya.
